PHD RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN NETHERLANDS 2011

PHD RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN NETHERLANDS 2011

PhD Research Fellowship in Netherlands 2011, Tidal and Environmental Dynamics of the Ems estuary at Utrecht University.
Deadline for applying 30/11/2011.

Requirements for student:
We seek highly motivated candidates, who enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary international team. They should hold a MSc degree in physical oceanography, applied mathematics or related natural sciences and who should have knowledge of (geophysical) fluid dynamics. Experience with numerical modelling and knowledge of morphodynamics are of advantage.

Note:
The Ems-Dollart estuary, located at the Dutch-German border, is characterised by ongoing intensification of tides, increasing turbidity and rapid degradation of environmental conditions. The aim of this project (joint collaboration between Utrecht University and Technical University Delft ( TUD) to gain more fundamental knowledge about the dynamics of this system, and in particular about its sensitivity to changing external conditions, related to sea level rise and human interventions. The project is part of a larger international Wadden Sea-Georisk project focusing on the Ems, which involves seven other Dutch and German partners. The tasks of the successful applicant are: develop an idealised process-based model for hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics in the upper reaches of the Ems estuary, and quantify the sensivitity of tidal asymmetry and sediment trapping mechanisms to external forcing conditions, geometry of the domain and process formulations; extend the model such that it governs the dynamics of phytoplankton and oxygen and study the sensivitiy of environmental conditions to forcing and geometric conditions; quantitatively assess (together with German PhD student) the relative importance of climate change and human interventions on hydrodynamic and environmental characteristics of the Ems at specific time slices; to contribute to the fieldwork that will take part as part of the overall project; to contribute to the educational programme of the faculty.
