Netherlands 2011 PhD Research in Virtual Crowds and Characters at Utrecht University

[Netherlands 2011] Two PhD Research in the field of Computer Science (Character Animation, Path Planning and crowd simulation) at Utrecht University

Eligibility:Candidates should have:
  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline. Programming experience (preferably in C++) Affinity with virtual characters and game technology

Scholarship Open for International Students: No

Scholarship Description: The first PhD position is in the area of character animation. Many current animation systems allow only a basic control over a character’s movements, using a predefined set of recorded motions or a few different facial expressions. As a result the expressiveness of the virtual characters is low. The PhD student will work on developing an integrated framework for affective character animation. The second PhD position is in the area of path planning and crowd simulation. In the state-of-the-art, the interaction between characters is rather limited. In particular in crowded or constrained spaces, where e.g. many characters are running, walking in a group, or going out, these characters do not adapt their behavior to each other and do not move according to the social rules
